Memphis Zoo Jeff Buckley Plaque Memorial

"I cannot think of a more fitting place for such a tribute to his love for all living things....much better than a gravestone, to my way of thinking. It was most heart-warming to see the two new baby tiger cubs, who were born just last April. By the way, the male tiger is named 'Jeffrey.' I hope some of you will have an opportunity to visit the zoo, if you're ever in Memphis." --Mary Guibert

Dear Friends

On Friday, September 18th, two brass plaques were dedicated in Jeff's memory at the Mephis Zoo. The Larger one reads "In memory of Jeff Buckley, 1966 - 1997, from his family, friends, fans and Sony Music Entertainment/Columbia Records." A second, smaller one reads, "To our beloved "Scottie", Our tears will never dry... until we kiss you again, M.G."

The plaques are located on the corner wall in the observation area overlooking the Sumatran Tigers. Jeff visited the zoo frequently and had made an appointment to be interviewed for a volunteer keeper's position, the week before he passed. He loved the cats and the hippo, but never left without visiting the butterfly exhibit.

The idea for this memorial came as a result of my request that donations to the zoo be made in lieu of floral tributes at Jeff's memorial services, a little over a year ago. So many of Jeff's friends and fans contributed so generously (and Sony/Columbia gave us matching funds) that the Memphis Zoo proposed a permanent marker in his memory. I cannot think of a more fitting place for such a tribute to his love for all living things...much better than a gravestone, to my way of thinking. It was most heartwarming to see the two new baby tiger cubs, who were born just last April.

By the way, the father tiger's name is "Jeff". I hope some of you will have an opportunity to visit the zoo, if you're ever in Memphis.

Thanks, once again, for all your good thoughts and encouragement. I could not have survived this crushing loss without your prayers and your support.

Gratefully,
